In 2018, Lauren Johnson wrote a letter to Amazon in which she requested that they rebrand their virtual assistant, describing the bullying that her daughter, Alexa, was enduring due to the company's choice to use a real name for their AI’s wake word and persona. Thus began her efforts to raise awareness of this issue online, under the heading "Alexa is a Human."

In her podcast, which is available in both video and audio format, she interviews people who have been personally affected by Amazon's product, including parents of children named Alexa, as well as women named Alexa. She also speaks with people whose work involves using and promoting the smart speaker technology.
